WHAT IS COSHH?

At NATAS, we are pleased to offer an extensive COSHH training course that provides delegates with thorough knowledge and understanding in relation to the working environment. But what is COSHH?

COSHH is an acronym for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. This course will provide delegates with an overview of COSHH, and it will give you an introduction to identifying, controlling, and staying safe around hazardous substances in the workplace.

The training also covers an understanding of the legal requirements concerning the COSHH regulations.

WHAT SUBSTANCES ARE HAZARDOUS UNDER COSHH?

COSHH regulations cover any substances classed as hazardous to health. It defines these as follows:

  • Any mixture identified as; toxic, harmful, an irritant, corrosive, sensitising, carcinogenic (could potentially cause cancer), mutagenic (could potentially change a person’s DNA), or reprotoxic (could potentially affect a person’s sexual function or fertility, or harm unborn children).
  • Any substance present in the air above its Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL). This is defined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
  • Any biological agents used at work (such chemicals used in laboratories).
  • Any other substance that can harm a person’s health in the workplace, either because of its properties, how it is used, or simply because it is present.

WHY IS COSHH TRAINING IMPORTANT?

As COSHH deals with hazardous substances, it is a vital training certification for your team to have in order to reduce the risk of exposure. With proper COSHH training, staff are less likely to fall unwell by being exposed to hazardous substances and will know how to properly work with the different substances and protect themselves.

COSHH regulations are far more complicated than they first appear, so dedicated training is vital to ensuring your team is appropriately educated and trained on the matter.

Who is this course suitable for?

The course is essential for anyone who might have to carry out COSHH risk assessments as part of their job role. However, all staff members on your team might benefit from the training as reduced risk can improve workforce morale.

This course will provide delegates with an overview of COSHH. It will give you an introduction to identifying, controlling, and staying safe around hazardous substances in the workplace.

This course can also be used as a refresher for existing knowledge and training.
