Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW) 2025 is a global initiative raising awareness of asbestos-related health conditions and promoting safety measures.
Launched in 2004 by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation (ADAO), GAAW runs from 1-7 April, and aims to educate the public about the dangers of exposure. The week reminds us that asbestos remains a significant health threat despite being banned in many countries and educates the general public on how to protect themselves from exposure.
Why is Asbestos Awareness So Important?
Asbestos awareness is crucial for protecting workers, tradespeople, and anyone who may encounter asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in older buildings. Asbestos is highly dangerous when disturbed, as it releases harmful fibres into the air that can cause long-term health problems.
Asbestos-related diseases, like lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis, often take decades to develop, but are also often fatal. Despite being banned in the UK more than 25 years ago, asbestos remains a significant threat, especially in buildings constructed before 2000.
Disturbing asbestos during maintenance, renovation, or construction work is a common cause of exposure. This underscores the need for proper asbestos awareness training online or in person to prevent accidents and safeguard health.
