Who is this online training course suitable for?

The Manual Handling Awareness course is designed for employers and employees alike and aims to educate students on safe manual handling techniques, the risks involved and regulations regarding manual handling. The course also provides ROSPA-approved Manual Handling Awareness Certification upon completion of the final assessment.

WHAT IS MANUAL HANDLING?

For those unaware, manual handling is defined as the act of using your body to move objects. However, there is a right and wrong way of doing so.

To be able to perform manual handling correctly, which means being able to do so without suffering injury, proper training is needed. This manual handling course training covers the best practice techniques and movements that will result in efficient manual handling with minimal risk of bodily injury.

Manual handling is a part of everyday life for many and can occur in any setting. Improper manual handling will often lead to injury through the process of repetitive movements and strain, bad posture and incorrect technique.

WHO NEEDS MANUAL HANDLING TRAINING?

Manual handling is a large aspect of many professions’ everyday jobs and duties. It requires us to use our bodies to lift and move heavy objects; with any professional task, there is a right and wrong way of doing things. From lorry drivers unloading a delivery to landscape gardeners moving large quantities of earth, manual handling is an aspect many of us face daily

To learn the most efficient and safe manual handling techniques, relevant training is necessary to keep your team safe and the organisation protected from liability cases. This means it is the employer’s or those responsible’ duty to ensure the team is well-equipped and trained for manual handling.

WHY IS MANUAL HANDLING IMPORTANT?

Manual handling is the most common cause of workplace injury, and so to ensure a safe and risk-free work environment, all staff must be trained on proper manual handling techniques. Not using these methods or having the knowledge to do so could mean causing temporary injury or even leading to further issues later in life.

By ensuring all team members on site receive efficient manual handling training, your business can significantly minimise the risk of injury and loss of earnings.

ASSOCIATED RISKS OF MANUAL HANDLING

If your team do not undergo a proper manual handling course, there are several risks they could face. Typically, injuries caused may manual handling are musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and affect the musculoskeletal system. This system in the body supports the movement, stability and function of the human body and is made up of the skeleton, cartilage, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and connective tissues.

As a result of improper manual handling, the risk of injuries includes;

  • Upper Limb Disorders (ULDs)
  • Lower Limb Disorders (LLDs)
  • Back Injuries
  • Hernias

However, it should be noted that this is not an exhaustive list, and many other manual handling injuries are possible, such as crush injuries and lacerations.

What Legislation Affects Manual Handling?

Three essential pieces of legislation regulate safe manual handling practices. The first is The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which identifies duty holders. Second is, The Management of Health and Safety at work Regulations 1999, which focuses on the employer’s duties, and finally, is Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, detailing the associated risks.

What Must an Employer Consider in Manual Handling?

It is an employer’s duty to ensure the best health and safety practices are in place, which goes beyond appropriate training for your team. It is the employer’s duty also to consider the following:

  • The employee’s physical health and ability.
  • The load weight, shape and size.
  • The level of training the employee has.
  • Workplace conditions and hazards.

What is the HSE’s Definition of Manual Handling?

The Health and Safety Executive defines manual handling as “…any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or bodily force”.

This means that the load can be a person, animal or object.

What is the Most Common Mistake in Manual Handling?

The most common mistake that can be made in manual handling by those untrained is bending their back when lifting heavy objects. By arching your back when bending to lift an object, you can cause sprains and strains within your spinal column.

This is a totally incorrect way to lift heavy objects, and with our expert training, we can educate you on the correct way of doing so to avoid injury.

Understanding Manual Handling

When we talk about manual handling, we’re delving into a realm of tasks that necessitate the use of the human body to lift, lower, move, hold or restrain objects. It’s a common element of many jobs, whether it involves lifting boxes in a warehouse or moving hefty equipment in a factory setting. Ensuring safety, promoting well-being and adhering to legal requirements becomes paramount when we’re engaging in these activities.

What Manual Handling Awareness Entails

What exactly does manual handling awareness encapsulate? Well, at its core, it’s about imparting knowledge to employees about the right ways to go about these tasks. It’s about recognising the inherent dangers of certain activities, teaching correct lifting, carrying, and moving techniques, introducing them to mechanical aids when applicable, and making them aware of the stringent health & safety manual handling regulations that they’re bound by. Additionally, it provides guidance on how to prevent injuries and what measures to take if, unfortunately, an injury does occur.

The Importance of Awareness in Manual Handling

The importance of having an acute awareness of manual handling cannot be stressed enough. Without a proper grasp of techniques and potential hazards, workers are at risk of incurring various injuries, including back pain or even more severe musculoskeletal disorders. Beyond just the physical aspect, there’s also an efficiency angle. When workers are adept at handling materials correctly, not only is the task executed safely, but it’s also done more efficiently, leading to increased productivity.
