What is the Difference Between Licensed and Non-Licensed Asbestos Training?

When it comes to working with and removing asbestos, the work is often labelled as either licensed or non-licensed. This indicates the most appropriate measures to be taken when dealing with the ACMs, as well as suitable preventative measures and qualifications required for the work.

Non-Licensed asbestos work is usually classified as lower risk, and although training is necessary it does not require a license.

Licensed asbestos work involves activities labelled as high-risk and significant hazards and must be carried out by a licensed professional.

What are Asbestos-Containing Materials?

Asbestos-containing materials, otherwise known as ACMs, are the common building materials often found on construction sites that have been created with asbestos. This now-illegal building material was commonly used in construction between the years 1930 to 1980. Asbestos is now considered a significant health hazard,  responsible for the deaths of 5,000 people every year. When ACMs are disturbed in the process of removal or renovation in a building, asbestos fibres are released into the air and consequently inhaled by the public. It is best practice to remove ACMs from a building using the expertise of trained, licensed asbestos operatives.

What is included in the role of an Asbestos Removal Operative?

An asbestos removal operative is tasked with a high standard of work relating to and regarding asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). This includes both ACMs within the built space and contamination of the external environment. Their role is to remove or make safe the ACMs to reduce exposure to the public. This role requires licensed training as it is generally considered more high-risk with direct contact in removing asbestos.
