P401 – Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM)

To provide candidates with theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of asbestos sample identification using polarised light microscopy (PLM) and dispersion staining techniques.

Objective:

The objective of the course is to provide candidates with theoretical and practical knowledge of the techniques of asbestos sample identification using polarised light microscopy (PLM) and dispersion staining techniques.

All our training is delivered by industry-experienced tutors and is in accordance with BOHS syllabus HSG 248 (Asbestos: The Analysts Guide), and, in particular, Appendix 2 ‘Asbestos in bulk materials: sampling and identification by polarised light microscopy (PLM)’. The BOHS proficiency certificates (P-certs) are internationally recognised qualifications.

What is the Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM)?

For accurate and efficient asbestos analysis, specific knowledge and training are required. This is where NATAS’s Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM) training course comes in.

Asbestos bulk analysing is a crucial part of the identification process. Once asbestos has been identified, it must be managed in line with the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2012, Regulation 4. The P401 – Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM) course gives delegates the skills and knowledge to do this to a high standard.

Suitability – Who should attend?:

This course is designed for asbestos bulk analysts and laboratory analysts, in addition to anyone who requires a deeper understanding of the asbestos analysis process (e.g. laboratory quality manager).

The qualification is suitable for anyone required to analyse bulk asbestos samples, anyone considering a career in asbestos sampling and those responsible for managing asbestos laboratory analysts.

Pre Course Requisites:

Before beginning the course, there are some prerequisites necessary. Firstly, it would be desirable if delegates have at least one month’s work experience in analysing asbestos bulk samples. However, this is not compulsory.

Essential is an understanding of HSG248 Asbestos: The analyst’s guide for sampling, analysis and clearance procedures.

Any queries can be sent via info@natas.co.uk, and one of our industryexperienced trainers will reply accordingly.

Duration:

The course takes place over three days of classroom training. At the end of the training, written and practical assessments will take place on the third day.

Outcome/Qualification:

Candidates who pass all three assessments receive a certificate which shows they have been awarded a Proficiency Certificate in P401 – Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM).

Expenses:

We currently provide in-house training only for BOHS P401; laboratory space is required for onsite training. A microscope and fume cupboard are also necessary for each candidate attending.

The course cost is £650 (no VAT), which is the BOHS exam fee per person.
